Kitchen = Cure: How A Kitchen Makeover Healed Me

Before you start throwing expensive medical tests, superfoods, and herbs at your health problems, you are probably wasting your money if you don’t also give your kitchen a makeover.
If you’re new here, my name is Sherry Rothwell. I’ve been a holistic nutritionist for over two decades, and I’m currently a 3rd-year student of medical herbalism.
In this video, I’m going to share with you my process and passion for doing Kitchen Makeovers, which I believe are the missing foundation in people’s health, weight loss, and healing journeys.
My passion for Kitchen Makeovers was born out of necessity. You see, when I was diagnosed with mono at the age of 19, I was forced to become health-conscious.
Before my mono diagnosis, the only times I gave any thought to my food were when I wanted to ‘pork out’ or starve myself to lose weight. I had no idea that my diet was the cause of my acne, extreme PMS, depression, and paranoia.
One of the gifts of mono is the sensitivity that it gives you. Mono allowed me to really feel the effects of what I was putting in my body. I could tell with precision when something was giving me energy vs. what was draining it.
In less than a week, I completely switched from the Standard North American Diet to a whole foods diet. Three weeks later, I felt about 70% better—and that meant that, despite my diagnosis, not only did I not have to take time off work, but I actually became healthier because of it.
While it took about two years before I felt 100% energy-wise, a whole host of other issues with my health went away on their own.
My kitchen makeover recreated the foundation of my health. As a result, pesky health issues simply resolved themselves.
My focus was simply two things:
-
Eating natural whole foods
-
Stopping the intake of toxins and stimulants in my body
My body did the work of detoxification and healing—just as it was designed to do. The only block to healing my body was me.
All it needed to heal was for me to stop getting in the way. I didn’t know better.
I didn’t understand the way the body works to heal itself. Like most people, I was raised to think that if something is wrong with the body, you go to the doctor and they figure it out.
But let’s face it—unless your doctor is a self-educating nutrition nerd, they’ve probably studied maybe up to six hours of basic nutrition. They never studied how to heal the body and prevent disease. They are experts in diagnosis, medication, and surgery.
Once I decided to learn to eat real food and interpret my body’s language, I was able to take control of my own health and let nature heal me.
As a result, the following health issues resolved:
-
Yeast infections
-
Bladder infections
-
Acne
-
Extreme PMS
-
Depression
-
Paranoia
-
15 extra pounds
Six months later I had:
-
Clear skin
-
A sunny disposition
-
Motivation and passion
One year later, I had no more yeast or bladder infections.
And two years later, I had no more symptoms of mono and had dropped 15 lbs—without having made any effort at all to lose weight. The healthier I became, the faster I dropped body fat.
All of these things happened as a result of simply eating a diet of natural food and dropping the toxic personal care and cleaning products.
Prior to this time, I was an aesthetician who had been soaking in fumes all day. Eventually, I quit doing esthetics and started working in health food stores.
With over 30 years of experience in the natural health world, I have seen a lot of people change little with their diet and lifestyle, while hoping they can just throw superfoods and herbs at their health challenges—only to get limited results.
Many times, it’s not their fault at all. Many practitioners overlook the basic foundational things and jump straight to fancy supplements and expensive tests. It’s not the practitioners’ fault either—they simply don’t have time to educate each person one-on-one for deep diet and lifestyle changes.
That’s why the results are limited through supplements, bio-identical hormone therapy, herbs, etc.
Besides the fact that healing is a mind, body, emotion, and soul experience—the body needs a nutritional foundation to be able to utilize the healing powers of superfoods, herbs, etc.
The reason why is that everything works in synergy with the co-enzymes in the body that make our internal chemical reactions function.
Those co-enzymes are vitamins and minerals. Our biggest resources when it comes to vitamins and minerals are our meals—not isolated synthetic supplements.
A nutritional foundation of balanced meals made of real food is key for our healing.
The superfoods and herbs work in synergy with your diet. If the diet and lifestyle stay the same, they work against the hormones, supplements, tinctures, and superfoods.
I’m not saying that you can never get miraculous results by just adding a supplement or herb—because it does happen to people all the time.
I can even attest to that from my own personal experience—but that’s the exception, not the rule. And that usually happens when the person’s condition is not that “far gone” yet.
For everyone else, a whole foods Kitchen Makeover is paramount.
